Celebrating All Presidents!

By Amy Lin, UGA Online Marketing, Feb 21, 2011 9:00 AM

JimFielding Including our very own! In light of President's Day, we wanted to take the time to honor our very own Mr. Jim Fielding, President of Disney Stores Worldwide, with a little poem:

It was way back in May two thousand and eight

On a beautiful day, of much great await

That Jim Fielding, our man,  burst right through the doors,
With a one hundred acre wide smile and dreams for our new stores .

"I'm bringing the magic back!" He shouted with glee,
As everyone cheered and laughed, screaming, "Yipee!"

He went straight to his office and started with no delay
And exclaimed, "We want to be the best 30 minutes of every child's day!"

With that motto in mind and a handful of pixie dust
Jim lead the way and oversaw a team he could trust.

Teams of global operations, merchandising and sales
Plus marketing and everything related to retail

Began creating  magical places of grand castles and car sets
And color-changing trees that would hang over our guests.

Pixie dust was sprinkled on the online world too,
As transformed into something shiny and new!

The smiles of our guests, the stories, the fun
The creativity, the love, and the magic- the return had begun!

The Disney Store magic was finally restored
And in fact it became something everyone adored!

It's now two thousand and eleven and the magic is still spreading
To Canada, Puerto Rico- all over the world we are heading!

All thanks to our prez, our leader and our friend
We know the magic you brought back is not quick to end!

(This poem is quite cheesey but we hope you enjoyed the fun rhymes!
Now celebrate all presidents with an extra 25% off clearance and have a magically good time!)

Happy Valentine's Day! Our Valentine Memories with You!

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Feb 14, 2011 11:02 AM

ValentineMickey Happy Valentine's Day to You and Yours from Disney Store! In honor of Valentine's Day we thought we would share a very endearing story from our personal interactions with you, our beloved guest. For all the reasons to celebrate love, we think it's especially important to remember the love we have from and for our guests! Steve Fryer, Director, Guest Services of Disney Store shares a very special story of love, unfortunate typos, and a happily ever after ending:

Several years ago, a doctor wanted to order something extra special for his wife on Valentine's Day. She was feeling ill at the time and he wanted to get her something that would make her feel good about herself and cheer her up. He went online and ordered a personalized nightshirt- it was one of those really cute nightshirts with Mickey and Minnie kissing! So the doctor ordered the nightshirt and specified that he wanted it to say "Be My Valentine" on it.  Back in those days our system of dealing with personalization was a little different: the guest would type out their desired message and send it to us, we would receive it and retype it into a separate system that would allow for the personalization. Because we had to retype messages ourselves, there was room for error. When the nightshirt arrived at the doctor's door just a few days before Valentine's Day the doctor was horrified to find that instead of "Be My Valentine," "Be Mt Valentine" was written on the nightshirt! You can imagine the implications! The letter 'y' is so close to the letter 't' on the keyboard so the accidental mistyping created a very different message! The doctor called us right away and told us the whole story. We quickly personalized a new nightshirt for him- one with the right letters- and asked the doctor what his wife's favorite Disney movie was. He said it was Lady and the Tramp and we asked him if his wife owned the DVD yet. He told us she didn't so we sent a Lady and the Tramp DVD, a personalizable snow globe, and the Mickey and Minnie nightshirt using overnight shipping to get it to him. Well, the package got there just in time for Valentine's Day and the doctor's wife was delighted and suprised and became his Valentine-not Mt. Valentine-that year. :)

We've learned a lot from this experience, as you can imagine, and we now have a system that directly takes exactly what the guest types and uses it for personalization. There is less room for human error inbetween! We won't have anymore Mt. Valentines, that's for sure!

The Love Story Behind Disney Store's Valentine's Plush Collection

By Amy Lin, UGA Online Marketing, Feb 11, 2011 5:35 PM

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and there's lots of Disney love worth celebrating! For this year's season of love, Disney Store principal designer Steve Thompson created a Valentine's Plush Collection full of classic Disney nostalgia and cuddly magic. With a notebook, pen and camera in hand I walked over to Steve's desk and asked him to spill the love story behind our most lovable Valentine's Plush collection yet!

Amy: Can you share a little bit about how you became a Disney artist and your involvement with the Valentine's Plush Collection?
Steve: I went to California Institute of Arts (CAL Arts) to study animation. Walt Disney was involved in the founding of the school so there were always close ties. Right after I graduated I went straight to Disney! I first spent 11 years in animation, and I've been here at Disney Stores for the past 5 years. This collection is the first plush collection I have ever worked on! Prior to this I was working on snow globes, figurines and ornaments.

A: So how did the Valentine's Plush Collection come about?
S: The Valentine's Plush Collection was a collaboration between me and the plush merchants. The merchants came up with the idea to have the Classic World of Disney as our theme. We wanted to use classic characters and give a sort of vintage feel to the plush so younger guests would know and recognize their lovable favorite characters and older guests would feel like they were rediscovering their childhood. We also wanted a plush that would be able to carry little valentines in honor of the holiday!

Dumbo A: How did you carry out this classic vintage theme in your design of the plush?
S: We implemented our theme through our character selection and the vintage style we used to design each plush. For example, one of the design details that give the Valentine's Plush Collection a vintage sort of feel is the blush that we put on the cheeks of the characters. I noticed the blush style on a lot of vintage toys and it seemed perfect for a bashful, blushing Valentine-giving moment for the plush characters. You will also notice that the Mickey and Minnie we used looks a little different than our modern day Mickey and Minnie. This version of Mickey and Minnie is called pie-eyed Mickey and Minnie. You'll notice that the proportions are a little different from modern day Mickey and Minnie and that their eyes have little wedges in them-hence the name, pie-eyed. This is the style of the first era of Mickey and Minnie and helps carry out our classic vintage theme for the collection. The theme carries over into the little valentines tucked away in the hearts as well- you'll notice that the graphic design has a very vintage feel.

A: There are so many lovable Disney characters- how did you decide which characters you wanted to put in this collection?
S: We chose Mickey and Minnie, of course, to be the centerpiece pair, but we also tried to find pairs that were not as obvious and not couples, like Dumbo and Timothy Q. Mouse so that we could appeal to a broader audience. We also made sure to choose classic characters that both older and younger guests would recognize and love!

A: What do you focus on when you are drawing and designing characters?
S: I try to keep things true to the characters, true to the story, and I like to bring my love for the Disney characters through what I create.

A: What is the process of designing a plush collection?
S: First, I brainstorm with designers and merchants about what we are going to create. We look at promotions and upcoming movies to see what characters we want to feature. Next, I create a rough sketch of the character designs. If everyone likes the sketches, I clean it up and create turnaround drawings, which are drawings of each character from the front, back, side, top, bottom. After my drawings are finalized I send the drawings, plus instructions on fabric, size, and colors to a vendor who makes samples of the product. The vendor sends us the samples and we look at them to see if we like it. We take photos of the samples, make corrections and revisions and send the sample and new directions back to the vendor. This goes back and forth a few rounds until everyone is happy. Finally, the plush is produced and it ends up in your local Disney Store! This whole process takes about one year, so we start designing one year ahead!

We want our products to meet the Disney Store aesthetic and that's what makes us different from the rest of the marketplace- we have the ability to show characters you don't see every day. We want everyone who comes into a Disney Store to have that special reaction to a character because we're all about the storytelling experience we offer in our Disney Stores. When I was in high school I worked at a Disney Store. It's really cool because I remember when I was working I would always be really excited to see the new products that would come in. I keep that in mind now when I'm drawing and designing- I remember what it was like working there and I want the people working in the store to be just as excited when they see the new products as the guests.

A: Who is your favorite character from the Valentine's Plush Collection?
S: Dumbo!

A: Do you plan on giving one to someone special this Valentine's Day?
S: Yes! I had already planned on it. Smiles

A: Any hints at what's in store for next year?
S: I already have next year's collection ready! Next year's collection will be completely different. We want to give people a reason to keep coming back!
