Behind the Scenes of Villains 2 Vinylmation

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Oct 25, 2011 10:39 AM

Villains 2 Vinylmation have invaded the Disney Store this week! The Buzz wanted to learn more about how the Villains 2 Vinylmation series came to life and how they are more villainous than the first series. So we sat down with Vinylmation Artist, Kyle Jensen, to get the inside scoop.

The Buzz: Hi Kyle! Can you please share with The Buzz what you do here at Disney Store?

I am a member of the design team that designs almost everything you see in Disney Stores except toys. So on any given day I could design anything from a t-shirt to a collectible to a backpack. In my role, I am able to combine my original designs with innovative fashion trends. The end product is not only fashion-forward, but appealing to our Guests. Also, I have the opportunity to work with the Vinylmation team in designing our Disney Store Vinylmation figures. It’s such a blast!

The Buzz: So, the big question is what is Villains 2 all about?

This one is pretty simple:  Villains 2 is all about giving fans MORE Disney villians that we love to hate!

The Buzz: Awesome! How is this series different than the first Villains series?

While designing the first series, we found that some of the characters would be better represented on vinyl if we designed their faces a little differently than your typical Vinylmation figure. This time, we decided to use the entire vinyl figure as a canvas for our villains’ faces, allowing their expressions to stretch from the head onto the body. We think this translates well for maximum eeeeeevil impact!

The Buzz: Which Villains did you design and where did you get inspiration from?

I designed Shere Khan, Hades and Bowler Hat Guy. Whenever I get to do a Villian vinyl, the inspiration comes directly from the movie itself. The more I watch the villain come to life, the easier the design becomes and I actually find myself quoting the character as I am designing (drives the people around me crazy)!

The Buzz: Who’s your favorite character in the series?

Of my designs, I love the way Sher Khan came out. I designed different versions of him, and  the version that was chosen by the team was actually my second choice, but the way my design translated onto the vinyl figure looks awesome as the final product. My other favorites are Runaway Brain, Eyzma and Shadowman. I want to collect them all!

The Buzz: Did you always want to be an artist?

No. I wanted to be a pro baseball player, actually! But I never quite had enough athletic skill to go very far, so I figured I would be an artist instead.  :)

The Buzz: Who’s your favorite Disney character?

I have to be honest, when it comes to Disney characters I love them all, but if I have to choose one it would have to be Goofy. The “How-To” shorts are some of my favorite Disney cartoons!

Thanks so much for sitting down with us, Kyle!

So now that you’ve got the behind the scenes scoop, who’s your favorite Vinylmation Villain? Check them out on!

Behind the Scenes of the New Disney Animators’ Collection

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Oct 17, 2011 9:00 AM

The Disney Animators’ Collection is the Holiday 2011 must have! This amazing collection of beautiful princess toddler dolls launched exclusively in stores, on, and at Disney Theme Parks this month. The Buzz had the honor of getting to know Disney Store’s Design Director for Toys, Nomi Vela. Read on to learn more about Nomi and the evolution of the Disney Animators’ Collection from the sketchpad to the shelves at Disney Store.

  Animator toddler group

The Buzz:  Hi Nomi! Can you please share with The Buzz what you do here at Disney Store?

I lead the Disney Store Design Team in developing toys, plush, stationery and home table tops from concept to the final product. The most important part of our job is collaborating with Walt Disney Studios (Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and Disney Toon studios). We collaborate to make sure that the aesthetics in our product assortment are true to the Disney stories they are inspired by. Our goal is for our product to trigger nostalgic emotions in our guests, similar to the emotions they experience when they watch Disney films.

The BuzzHow did the Disney Animators’ Collection come about?

Originally, I had the honor of working with Glen Keane on the Rapunzel toddler doll after Tangled came out (The Rapunzel toddler doll was created in 2010 when the film was released). At many of our meetings, we would talk about Disney Princess’ influences on our daughters and how Disney Princess stories have become almost an heirloom that are passed down from generation to generation. So, to celebrate Glen and Mark’s legacy (Glen and Mark are the creators of 7 out the 10 Disney Princesses) and to honor the Disney Princess heritage, we began to brainstorm about creating an entire collection of toddler dolls. The Disney Animators’ Collection is truly for little girls and the little girl in all of us who love the Disney Princesses!

The Buzz How was Disney Store able to team up with Disney Animators from the Walt Disney Studios?

We have an amazing relationship with the Disney Animation Studios since we started working with them on Princess and the Frog so when Glen, Mark and the Disney Store design team came together to create this collection, it was a natural collaboration. Disney Store’s unique products are created with major influence from our partners at Walt Disney Studios; their team provides us with so much creative inspiration!

The BuzzWhat was the process like working with the Disney Animators’?

Disney Store’s Design team was honored to be in the same room creating a collection with legendary animators like Glen and Mark.  The animators had us do research on each of the Princesses and, as the creators behind each Princess, they provided us with guidance on how a Disney princess like Mulan or Ariel might look and act as a little girl.

There was a big task put in front of us because each princess is so different. Mark had us research what little girls wear in China and India for Mulan and Jasmine. We also worked very closely with Glen on the facial sculpts of each dolls. It was challenging and fun at the same time, because we had to think outside the box and put ourselves in the shoes of a Disney Princess. For example, with Pocahontas, we had to capture her inner determination and courage at an early age in her toddler expression.

Disney Store designer Steve Thompson described the experience “speechless and timeless!”

The BuzzDo you see Disney Store collaborating with the Disney Animators in the near future?

Disney Animators’ Collection is an exclusive brand at Disney Store. We are discussing expanding the collection into other categories such as collectibles and ornaments.

The BuzzDo you have a favorite Princess in the collection?

Oh gosh! Pocahontas! Her eyes are so intense and they remind me of my daughter’s.

The BuzzLastly, who’s your favorite Disney character?

Snow White, because she was very close to Walt’s heart and she was the first princess that really started it all. Walt Disney believed and risked everything on this FIRST princess animated feature film. I live by his words “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality." The Disney Animators’ Collection reflects that collaboration.

Thank you, Nomi! We love ALL of the new Disney Animators' Collection Dolls! Check out to watch a video of Nomi interviewing Glen Keane and Mark Henn.

Now that you have the inside scoop, which one of the Animator's Collection dolls is your favorite?

Disney Store is Proud to Shine the Light on Domestic Violence

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Oct 13, 2011 5:26 PM

Yesterday, Disney Store Times Square Spectacular turned purple to “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) were joined by a coalition of advocates, elected officials, non-profit leaders, and survivors to illuminate the signs of Times Square purple as a part of OPDV’s statewide Shine the Light on Domestic Violence Campaign.

“Tonight the lights of Times Square will be lit purple to raise awareness about a problem that affects 25% of American women in one of the world’s most visible places,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. “Domestic violence is an issue that is too often dealt with behind closed doors – but tonight we’re bringing it out into the open, to remove the shame and stigma.”
