25th Anniversary, Day 17: Vinylmation Past & Present

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Mar 11, 2012 11:56 PM

Do you know the name of the Disney collectible toy line where figures like this come from?

Country Daisy Duck
If you answered Vinylmation, then you’d be correct! These awesome little figurines are taking the world by storm with their ever-changing artwork in each new series design. They have become quite the collecting sensation!

Vinylmation is a fun and affordable collectible designer toy originally created by Disney Theme Park Merchandise. With its exclusive releases and blind boxes, Vinylmation is all about creative expression and the mysterious thrill of the chase.

First Vinylmation Series, Park #1

Park #1, first Vinylmation series released by Disney Theme Park Merchandise.

Devising a name for this unique collectors item came when Disney Cast Members thought to combine the word “Animation” with the world “Vinyl,” which is the medium upon which the creative designs are expressed. Currently the figure form used for the Vinylmation figurines is shaped like Mickey Mouse; however, artists do not consider themselves redesigning the famous mouse, but rather using the form as a blank three-dimensional canvas upon which Disney artists can express their creativity.

Vinylmation’s history with Disney Store is relatively young, as it was first announced in June 2010 that select Disney Stores would be carrying special series designed via a new line up of Disney Store artists. The Montebello, California location was the first of the stores to carry Vinylmation.

In November of 2010 a team of artists was assembled to help design Disney Store’s own exclusive New York City themed Vinylmation figurines that debuted at the grand opening of Disney Store Times Square.

Disney Store NYC Vinylmation Series
Following the exclusive release of NYC Vinylmation figurines, Disney Store followed with the first set of the wildly popular Villains series in January 2011. After these first Villains wreaked havoc at Disney Stores, they paved the way for a whole slew of new Vinylmation series designed exclusively for Disney Store. These series have included city-specific exclusives, Disney’s The Lion King, Villains 2, Tunes, and of course the totally awesome Robots. Want to know if your Vinylmation piece is a Disney Store creation? Check the bottom of your figurine for a unique artist signature! You might recognize some of the signatures below!

With their adorable, creative, and artistic designs, it is hard not to love Vinylmation figurines. Disney Store has an exciting year of Vinylmation planned, with new and never-before-seen series in store for Guests. We have an amazing set of artists on hand at Disney Store who are hard at work creating innovative and imaginative series of your favorite Disney characters. 25th Anniversary, Day 18: Retro Rewind! 1980s Fashion

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Mar 10, 2012 10:30 AM

Hi, Buzz readers!

Today we kick off the first of our new Saturday post series, the Retro Rewind. Every weekend leading up to Disney Store’s 25th Anniversary celebration we’ll take you on a trip back in time to learn about how fashion, movies, television, and even sports were during the time Disney Store made its debut in 1987. It’s a 25-year flashback to an era of Flashdance!

***

If there is anything that stands out about the 1980s, it would have to be the fashion! From the Ray Bans to the neon leg warmers, 80s style is recognizable anywhere. If we could take a sneak peek at what Guests to the first Disney Store in 1987 were wearing, we might see some of these awesome items:

1980s Fashion Outfit

So what did Disney fashion look like in the 1980s? Take a look at the photo collages below of the different styles of clothing with vintage 1980s Disney character artwork! Some of them are pretty rad!

1980s Disney TeesDisney tees from the 1980s sporting bright, neon colors and 80s designs of Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Disney Crew Neck 1980s SweatshirtsThe ever-popular crew neck sweatshirts of the 1980s! We love that Goofy is sketching a self-portrait in the bottom right sweatshirt design.

Disney 1980s Fashion Pieces
Tie-dye is the definition of the 80s! We love it paired with The Little Mermaid.

Today our Disney Store apparel still reflects some of these awesome 80s fashion styles. The Avengers Tee for men and Striped Mickey Mouse tee for boys looks similar to the faded design of the Cookie Monster shirt above. Our Striped Dolman Sleeve Minnie Mouse tee for women fashion tee shows off the loose-fitting style of 80s tops, while the luminous leggings of the Superstar Minnie Mouse Dress Set for girls pay homage to the flashy leggings of the 80s. And of course the crew neck sweatshirt is still around today!

80s Inspired Disney Store Apparel
What do you think? I remember seeing these fashion styles while growing up- I even wore some of them myself! Do any of you have vintage Disney clothing? What is your favorite part of 80s fashion? Tell me in the comments section!

25th Anniversary, Day 19: Flashback Friday! Disney Store New York

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Mar 09, 2012 7:00 AM

Continuing with our Disney Store-themed Flashback Fridays happening this month, we take a look today at the history of Disney Store in The Big Apple. Many of you are familiar with our newly-designed Times Square Disney Store- it’s our biggest store in North America! But did you know that Disney Store started out in New York on 5th Avenue? Read on to learn more about our journey from 5th Avenue to the bright lights of Times Square!

On May 26, 1996 Disney Store premiered in The Big Apple. Located on 5th Avenue and 55th Street in New York City, the new Disney Store’s location was fitting for the chic corner in the heart of the Manhattan.

The store was later converted into a Walt Disney Parks and Resorts World of Disney Store and remained the largest of its kind outside of Disney theme parks. In September of 2009, Disney Parks and Resorts announced that it would be closing the 5th Avenue World of Disney Store.

Disney Store finally made its triumphant return to New York City on November 4, 2010 when it debuted its two-story interactive retail destination Store and a digital Disney billboard that towers six stories above Times Square. With its newly-designed interior, Disney Store Times Square provides a magical experience for all guests!

Disney Store Times Square Interior
Disney Store Times Square has since been the host of many innovative and exciting new technologies that revolutionized the traditional retail store structure. We are always working to bring extra Disney magic to life!

One of the defining features of Times Square is the brilliant display of lights that dazzle the building fronts each and every day. When Disney Store became a resident of Times Square,  it was only fitting that we install a 2,000 square foot digital sign high above our store front. Today this digital sign is referred to as the Disney Store Times Square Spectacular Billboard.

In November 2011, with the help of Disney Parks, we used our Times Square Spectacular Billboard to introduce a state-of-the-art augmented reality experience. Click here to learn more about our unique augmented reality experience happening all throughout 2012 at our Times Square store.

So there you have it, Buzz readers! Thank you, New York, for welcoming Disney Store with open arms. We are pleased to be a member of the famous Times Square!

Have any of you ever visited the Times Square Disney Store? It was the first newly-designed Disney Store that I ever visited! Take a look at a couple photos my sister Catherine and I took while visiting the store last summer. We had a blast!

25th Anniversary, Day 24: Video Pre-Sales Past & Present

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Mar 04, 2012 9:00 AM

Disney Store has an extensive history of amazing products, from our cuddly plush to our beautifully detailed costumes. Every Sunday in March we will be highlighting different categories of these products and giving you a sneak into merchandise of the past!

***

Today’s post features our Disney Store video pre-sales, a very important part of our product history as Walt Disney’s original vision was to create full-length animated features that would stand the test of time! In May 1990, Disney Store’s first video pre-sale was launched, featuring everyone’s favorite tale from under the sea, The Little Mermaid. Guests received an exclusive lithograph set with their pre-order, as well as a bubble watch!

Not much has changed over 20 years later, as Disney Store continues to sponsor pre-sales, only now for Blu-ray and DVD combo packs to reflect changing film technology. And just like in 1990, Guests still receive exclusive lithograph sets, and now a coupon card with their pre-order. You may have spotted previous blog posts on The Buzz featuring these video pre-sales!

Muppets Lithograph Set
Disney Store still continues to offer an exclusive lithograph set with video pre-orders today, just like this one for The Muppets!

Does anyone have any original VHS Walt Disney Classics videos? I still have both The Little Mermaid and 101 Dalmatians! How many of you remember these Disney Store pre-sales? Share your stories with us!
