Flashback Friday! A Cinderella Story

By Official Disney Store Blogger,

On the 15th of February we commemorate the anniversary of the debut of Walt Disney’s 12th animated feature film in 1950, Cinderella. This enchanting tale tells us the story of the sweet Cinderella, who although mistreated by her evil stepmother and stepsisters, receives the magic of her Fairy Godmother that allows her to meet and fall in love with Prince Charming.

Cinderella Movie Poster

According to Disney history, Walt Disney admitted to Ilene Woods, the voice actress for Cinderella, that this young princess was his favorite of the Disney heroines. Walt claimed that there was something about Cinderella’s story that he could associate with. Not surprising, since Walt himself experienced a sort of rags-to-riches experience with his own story, as he risked everything to make his dreams come true!

It is fitting then, that Walt’s favorite scene from all his animated feature films is the one in which the Fairy Godmother transforms Cinderella’s torn pink gown into the gorgeous, iconic blue gown that she wears to the ball. Understandably so, as the magic swirls that frame the beautiful Cinderella are nothing short of breathtaking!

Cinderella's Gown Transformation

In the film, Cinderella’s step sisters, Anastasia and Drizella, wear magenta and green clothing, respectively, all throughout the film. This includes their night dresses and ball gowns. The only exception is the very first scene in which young Drizella is wearing a yellow dress as she stands next to her mother and sister. Story has it that these colors reflect their equally terrible attitudes towards Cinderella’s grace, beauty, and elegance—Anastasia being “red with rage” and Drizella being “green with envy.”

Disney Cast Members were sure to keep this in mind during the construction of Cinderella Castle in Walt Disney World. In the gorgeous mosaics that line the interior walls of the castle and illustrate the story of Cinderella, the evil stepsisters are depicted in subtle shades of green and red. Look closely in the images below for this exquisite attention to detail!

It is no secret that throughout the course of The Walt Disney Company’s history, Cast Members have kept the Magic of Disney alive by placing “Hidden Mickeys” in all things Disney. From the parks’ architecture to animated films, artfully inserted Mickey silhouettes add even more fun and excitement to the Disney experience. Cinderella was no exception to this rule! There are several Hidden Mickeys in the film… do any of you know where they are?

Tell me where the Hidden Mickeys in Cinderella are placed in the comments section below! Time to test your Disney eye!

Wishing you all a safe weekend of magical dreams,

Liz

Flashback Friday! Peter Pan Takes Flight

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Feb 03, 2012 3:05 PM

Happy Friday, Buzz Readers!

This weekend is sure to contain some extra Pixie Dust and magic, and not just because of all the Super Bowl wishes! On Sunday we also celebrate the 59th anniversary of the premiere of Disney’s animated classic, Peter Pan. A tale of adventure and imagination, Peter Pan was one of Walt Disney’s very favorite stories. Originally Walt had intended for Peter Pan to be his second animated film following Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but ultimately the film fell into place as his 14th in 1953.

Original Peter Pan Movie PosterOriginal 1953 Peter Pan film poster.

While Peter Pan remains the original star of the film, I wanted to focus the spotlight Peter Pan’s faithful pixie companion- the one and only Tinker Bell. Although completely silent besides her signature tinkling, what Tinker Bell lacks in sound she makes up for with her spunk, charisma, and “animated” gestures.

So how did Tink’s infamous personality come to be?

We can all thank the young woman pictured below for that!

Margaret Kelly
Meet Margaret Kerry, the live-action reference model who brought Disney’s famous pixie to life for Disney animators. Contrary to some rumors swirling around that Tinker Bell’s design was based on Marilyn Monroe, Tink was in fact drawn from the mannerisms, actions, and poses of the 22-year-old Margaret Kerry.

Margaret was called in to audition in front of a team of Disney artists, including Tinker Bell’s lead animator, Marc Davis. After pantomiming a number of motions, Margaret was selected as the animation model for not only Tink, but also for the red-haired mermaid in the Neverland lagoon scenes.  She even provided the voice for the mermaid!

Peter Pan Pantomime Scenes
Margaret spent six months at Disney Studios pantomiming on a large soundstage equipped with oversized props, including a giant keyhole mounted on a stand as well as a giant pair of scissors used for the animated scene where Tinker Bell becomes trapped in a jewelry box. The footage from Margaret’s work was later used by Marc Davis and his team to draw Tinker Bell with realistic facial expressions, postures, and mannerisms. Check out the images below of Margaret on set! Do you recognize any scenes from Peter Pan?

Thanks to Margaret’s perfect pantomimes, we have the spunky pixie that represents the Magic of Disney today! Tinker Bell is a beloved member of the Disney family who can be seen everywhere, from her new home as a member of the Disney Fairies in Pixie Hollow to exclusive merchandise from our Disney Store 25th Anniversary Collection, like this Limited Edition Tinker Bell Figurine. She truly shows us that anything is possible; all we need is a little faith, trust, and pixie dust!

What do you think? Did any of you know about Margaret Kerry’s role in bringing Tinker Bell to life? Do you have any other neat facts about her story? Tell us in the comment section!

Off to Neverland,

Behind the Scenes with Character Artist Quincy Sutton

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Jan 31, 2012 3:05 PM

It takes a team of very talented Cast Members to bring Disney Store Magic to life each and every day. I had the great pleasure to sit down and chat with one such talented Cast Member— designer and artist Quincy Sutton. Read on to learn about all the awesome work Quincy does for Disney Store!

Quincy Sutton
The Buzz: Greetings, Quincy! Thanks for taking the time to interview with us! Can you tell our readers a little about what you do here at Disney Store?

Hey, Liz! I’m a Senior Character Artist for the Disney Store. As a designer, I focus on designing tees and Vinylmation.

The Buzz: Very cool! So what are the projects you’ve worked on for Disney Store so far?

I’ve done so many! Most recently I helped design and create figurines for the latest Vinylmation series, Tunes. For the tees, I focus primarily on Disney Princesses, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and classic characters, like Goofy, Donald Duck and Pluto.

The Buzz: Can you give us any sneak peeks into what you have planned for future projects?

Of course, I can’t give away too much, but there are some awesome Vinylmation series to look forward to! I’m also continuing work on a new line of adult Disney Princess and Minnie Mouse tees.

Quincy Sutton Designing
The Buzz: If you could design any product for Disney Store, what would it be?

I would definitely choose to work with my favorite character, John Worthington Foulfellow, better known as Honest John, from Pinocchio. I would like to design a fashion forward tee for Disney Store with Honest John. Ideally, I could help create a men’s fashion line based around his character- with pieces that reflect Honest John’s villainous persona and dressy style. Perhaps pieces like a top hat, ties, cuff links, etc.

The Buzz: Of course, I have to ask, why is Honest John your favorite Disney character?

I love his style, especially his top hat! In Pinocchio Honest John always found a way to look good!

Quincy Sutton and Honest John Piece

The Buzz: Let’s talk some more about your Vinylmation work. How long does it take to design a piece for a new series?

The whole process starts out as a concept. We come up with an idea of what a series will be
about and the next step is to choose characters that are relatable to Guests and relevant to the series. The characters in the series should be a mix of popular and classic characters. We then figure out how to design the selected characters to fit on the Vinylmation form. Sometimes a particular character may fit better on the form than others, but we never give up on a character, we always try our best to make it work. Our initial concepts then go through a series of approvals, and once approved, we complete the illustrations. These designs are then sent out to be painted onto the forms. It takes a few months to see the first pieces and usually about a year of work before the whole series is released.

The Buzz: Where does your inspiration come from when you’re designing Disney Store products?

When I’m doing character designs I go straight to the original source—the animated films! I look at the actual footage to capture the characters’ expression and personality, rather than using still artwork for reference. As for my personal inspiration, it comes from everywhere—music, paintings, fashion… and sometimes I put a little bit of pop culture inside the artwork.

Quincy Sutton hard at work!

Thank you, Quincy! We love all the fantastic designs you’re creating for Disney Store! Check out DisneyStore.com  for our Vinylmation Series and collection of tees for the entire family.
