Flashback Friday! Celebrating our Namesake

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Jan 20, 2012 4:19 PM

Today we celebrate the 82nd birthday of historic space pioneer Buzz Aldrin, one of the first two humans to ever set foot on the moon and the namesake for our Disney Store blog, The Buzz!

Buzz Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 20th, 1930 to his mother, Marion Moon (how ironic!) and his father, Edwin Eugene Aldrin. Thirty nine years later, Buzz and Neil Armstrong would make their historic Apollo 11 moonwalk to the largest worldwide television audience in history – an estimated 600 million people!

According to Buzz Aldrin’s official website, his real name is in fact Buzz Aldrin. In the early 80’s Buzz had his name legally changed from his given name, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. The name “Buzz” originated from his sister Fay Ann, who mispronounced the word “brother” as “buzzer.” What a perfectly catchy mispronunciation!

Thanks to Fay Ann, today we have another iconic “Buzz” space explorer – Disney·Pixar’s very own Buzz Lightyear! Our beloved Toy Story character was indeed named after the real life moonwalker. In fact, the two have met each other! Take a look at the two Buzzes in the pictures below:

Like Buzz Aldrin, Buzz Lightyear is no stranger to outerspace. In 2008, our Toy Story space ranger accompanied the crew of the STS-124 NASA space shuttle mission to make his dream of spaceflight come true during Disney Parks’ “Year of a Million Dreams” celebration. Buzz Lightyear stayed with the Expedition 17 crew in the International Space Station for approximately 6 months.

Check out Buzz with the NASA space shuttle!

You can take Buzz Lightyear on space travels of your own with Disney Store's Buzz Lightyear Action Figure, available at and Disney Stores near you. Adventures to infinity and beyond are only a few clicks away!

Disney Store and The Buzz wish a very happy birthday to Buzz Aldrin!

Signing off,

Woody, Buzz, Jessie and Friends Hit the Ice!

By Official Disney Store Blogger, Dec 23, 2011 2:00 PM

It’s the time of the year to strap on some skates and practice your twirls on the ice, and that’s just what our favorite characters from Toy Story 3 are doing!

Disney on Ice ™ presents Disney·Pixar’s Toy Story 3, a sensational live production including memorable moments from Andy’s beloved group of toys. Catch all the heroic action when Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, and the whole Toy Story gang escape from the rambunctious tots of Sunnyside Daycare and race for home in this fast-paced adventure.

A few of us over here at The Buzz were lucky enough to attend the premiere of the show, and we must say, it’s fantastic! Several celebrity fans were in attendance to celebrate the show opening, including Melissa Joan Hart, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Ariel Winter (Alex from Modern Family). Disney Store was fortunate enough to collaborate with Disney on Ice ™ to donate over 100 toys to Toys for Tots. Check out the action in the pictures below!

Alex Winter from Modern Family!

It was amazing to see all the characters in dazzling and humorous performances, including our favorite scene from Toy Story 3, with Barbie and her groovy bachelor Ken. If you want to rediscover the charm and magic of Toy Story 3, we highly recommend a family visit to a local performance near you!

Happy skating!
